Needed to Share

Prop 8 passed in California yesterday by a 4% margin - good, but too close for comfort. I am happy and know the Lord was on our side, but I know the battle is far from over. Last night I watched on the news as "No"s rioted and were clubbed by police in Hollywood (part of LA county - which, by the way, approved it by a marginal win). It was just sad to me that those in opposition to the proposition couldn't show everyone else involved the respect that they have been shown by others. I just loved the Church's statement they released yesterday,

"Most likely, the election results for these constitutional amendments will not mean an end to the debate over same-sex marriage in this country.

We hope that now and in the future all parties involved in this issue will be well informed and act in a spirit of mutual respect and civility toward those with a different position. No one on any side of the question should be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information."

I've also seen on my digiscrap boards over the last few days questions like, "Who is anyone to say who and who can't get married?" or "Why can you say what is right or wrong?" Well, I, as a single person, cannot. However, I have the right to stand up for what I know to be true and to stand with those around me that hold those same beliefs. That is what is wonderful about The United States of America. I have the right to vote the way my conscience directs me and if the majority also votes with me, then that is good for me. However, if the majority votes the other way, I will be disappointed, but I will understand that I live in a democracy and that is how the chips may fall. However, will I change what I know to be true? Will I stop fighting simply because the majority votes the other way. Not in an eternity. I will peaceably continue to stand for what is right with those around me - always giving respect and honor to those on the other side. I hope I can expect the same from others.

Thanks for making me cry! :) Mind if I share it on my blog, too? That's so sad about the riots.

Very nice! I have really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on this sad time. I have the same feelings, but have a hard time expressing them. Maybe it's because on Facebook, a friend of mine from High School asked me to delete her as a friend because we differed on the proposition. She continued to make rude comments. My though...how sad that someone no longer wants to be my friend because I believe differently than she. It really hurt me. It's not like she was my best friend or anything. It's just sad that someone doesn't want to be my friend. I guess I'm still trying to collect my feelings over that...
